AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) tutors will guide students toward academic and personal excellence that will reach far beyond their secondary school years. AVID tutors will be active participants in the learning, growth, and personal development of students with the goal of preparing students to successfully attend college.
QUALIFICATIONS: Education/Certification: Certified Teacher or Degreed (minimum Associate’s Degree) Current college student with at least 30 hours Experience: Some experience working with students in an educational environment is desirable. Major Responsibilities and Duties: AVID tutors will support high school students enrolled in the AVID elective course by providing direct instructional support to students with the assistance of an AVID elective course teacher. In addition, they will serve as role models to students. AVID tutors are critically essential to student success in the AVID elective course and beyond. Tutors will work approximately 12-15 hours per week. As a tutor, you are making a commitment to:
Facilitate tutorial sessions that use the principle of collaborative learning and the practice of students teaching other students through discussion of class and text notes. Monitor students’ tutorial worksheets, notes, and discussions to guide student presenters, as needed, on their points of confusion. Allow students to shoulder the responsibility for their own active learning while guiding them with strategies that they will become accustomed to using independently. Reinforce the idea that learning extends far beyond mere studying to form the basis for long-term accomplishments. Assist students in any subject area, by being familiar with students’ textbooks and materials and AVID classroom resources. Assist in teaching study skills and other aspects of college preparation. Take responsibility for the tone and atmosphere of the AVID classroom. Acknowledge the individuality of all AVID students and work to develop their academic and personal pride. Communicate regularly with the AVID teacher regarding student progress and areas of concern and confer with the teacher about future tutorial plans. Establish and maintain a positive rapport with students. Facilitate student learning in a challenging, yet supportive, tutoring environment. Set an example of personal excellence and high expectations for AVID students to follow.
